Our challenge was to design an attractive and budget-friendly housing project for a long, slender property with limited buildable lot area. The design resulted in a 32-unit linear building with bedroom views to the Wasatch Mountain Range and BYU campus. The project features exterior wall treatments and materials recognizable in the region as residential vernacular.
The unit entries face west where an overhang is provided at the walkway mitigating the harsh west solar exposure. Half high walls and punched openings are provided at the open stairs and balconies to allow for natural lighting while blocking much of the wind driven snow and rain. Rooms were strategically located and special sound assembly measures were implemented to reduce sound transfer from unit to unit.
